You have a star-based reward tier system in each of the levels. There’s one mission per star; complete the mission to earn the star. You can always go back to a level and earn the rest of the stars if you didn’t get all three of them the first time. The more stars you earn, the more gold and gems that you get as a reward. Later on in the game you’ll be able to spend your stars in the star shop, as well.
The battles start off very easy at first, but keep your team upgraded because if you slip and fall behind, they’ll become difficult way too quickly. Special enemies (I.E. poisonous enemies, self-destructors, etc) pose very little challenge initially, but as you unlock hard mode and make it forward into the farther reaches of the game, they pose FAR more of a challenge.
There are a number of ways to improve your hero, but one of the best is to Grow them, which increases their rarity by one. To do this, you need a character’s specific evolutionary cells, plus the evolutionary potions. To look for the resource that you need, go to the Grow area and tap on the potion that you don’t have enough of, and the game will show you where to pick up more of them.
In addition, you can improve your hero’s star ratings to increase their overall base stats, plus the stat multiplier per level that you gain. You need the right kind of hero fragments in order to increase the star level of your hero (fragments are character specific). Improve their star rating as quickly as possible so that you can take advantage of the incredible stat growth rate from having a high-star hero.
Watch out for patterns in the attacks of each enemy, especially tougher ones such as bosses. You can just plow through most of them early on without regard to what hits you take, but when the going gets tough, use a hit-and-run tactic. Watch out for the enemy to charge and/or wind up their strongest attack, get out of the way, let them send the attack to nowhere, then run back in and start attacking again.
