Transit Driver Appreciation Day is an annual event to celebrate the public service of public transit vehicle operators. The date of March 18 was selected to commemorate the first bus line, Blaise Pascal's Carosses à Cinq Sous in Paris, 1662[1].

In 2009, Hans Gerwitz and Shannon E. Thomas published a blog post[2] calling for a Bus Driver Appreciation Day. That year it was publicized by local transit-oriented blogs in Seattle[3], Virginia[4], and Washington, D.C.[5]
For the 2013 observance, Portland's TriMet established busdriverday.org.
By 2014, TriMet included rail operators by changing the name of Bus Driver Appreciation Day to Transit Driver Appreciation Day. Their site migrated to transitdriverday.org and the Amalgamated Transit Union began publicly observing the day[6] with the new name. This fostered extensive recognition throughout North America.

Public Announcements and ActivitiesDuring School Bus Driver Appreciation Day/Week (whichever is held in your town), a school can show appreciation for its drivers by posting announcements. For example, school district leaders can publish announcements in the local paper or on a public-access television channel, thanking bus drivers and listing their names and years of service. School principals can write letters of thanks to all of the bus drivers and publish them on their schools' websites. Additionally announcements about School Bus Driver Appreciation Day/Week should be made to parents and students in advance of its observance so that they can prepare their own ways of thanking bus drivers for all that they do.
Gifts from the SchoolIt is traditional and customary for school leaders or teachers to give gifts to bus drivers during this time of appreciation. One gift idea is something that shows the drivers' dedication to service in all kinds of weather, such as an umbrella or poncho with the school's mascot and name printed on it.
