She might be in official protective custody, but she’s way more than a job to Nate. When the enemy finally strikes and her life hangs in the balance, he’ll do anything to keep her safe. Five years ago, Special Agent and pararescue jumper Nate Schroeder was part of a rescue effort to extract American hostage Taya Kostas from the Taliban in Afghanistan.

He saved her life but it cost him dearly as he lost his partner and best friend. Now, Taya is the key witness set to testify in the trial of the terrorist who controlled the brutal group that kept her and others captive.

Now, Taya is the key witness set to testify in the trial of the terrorist who controlled the brutal group that kept her and others captive. A domestic terrorist group is determined to prevent that from happening and Nate inserts himself on the team providing her protection. The connection between Nate and Taya was obvious from the start but it took awhile to get the full story of what happened during her rescue. Both were emotionally impacted and he’s still dealing with the residual anxiety, which he masks through his numerous, meaningless sexual encounters. I loved Taya and her effect on Nate, along with their powerfully strong connection. The other aspect of the story involving the domestic terrorist group, The Brethren, was extremely exciting as we were given the point of view of the one recruited to kill Taya.

Their explosive attacks were shocking, brutal and exciting. It had me on the edge of my seat.I enjoyed the story though it took a little long to develop and protracted the reveal of Taya and Nate’s backstory unnecessarily.

However, the second half of the book delivered a huge payoff, both with the terrorist climax and the romance between Taya and Nate. It was satisfying to see Nate, a truly good guy, finally find his peace. SELF NOTE: I will not read this book. Just.gag. my initial reaction to his manwhoring ways just ruins my 'desire to read his book'. Really intense and really hot and really, really great action scenes as only Kaylea Cross can write them. I loved this book's plot, action and romance.

It all worked very well. I loved the H/h backstory, it made the people they became so much more believable. How do you move on from a hell of a situation? I wish the heroine and hero had more time to spend together when they weren't in danger but I guess that's the life of a featured couple in a romantic suspense story. Great writing, as usual. He asked, his tone and expression incredulous. How could you let that go after what he Nate starts out as quite a Man-ho & in a bad place. Taya is good for him.It would be easy to talk to her. Her quiet sincerity made him wish they could spend hours and hours together alone so he could just be in her company. She’d seen him at his lowest point and still admired him.

He felt safe enough with her that he knew he could tell her he wasn’t okay, because she’d understand.“How could you let that go?” he asked, his tone and expression incredulous. “How could you let that go after what he did to you? What they did to you?” “Forgiveness,” she answered. She knew it sounded overly simplistic and probably cheesy, but that’s exactly what had helped her break from the past. “I’ve forgiven him for the rest of it. I had to, to be able to go on.

But I didn’t forgive him for his sake. I forgave him for mine.” She needed Nathan to understand the difference. “Forgiveness was what earned me my true freedom.” He was quiet a moment.“Well then, you’re a better person than me,” he said in a low voice, his eyes burning with emotion.“Sleep well, little warrior,” he murmured instead, then turned to go.

Little warrior. The unique endearment, the admiration and respect in his voice as he said it, made her throat tighten. Before she could respond, he was gone.

Taya stared at the closed door, feeling like her heart had just been torn wide open.“Hey. What’s wrong?”He shook his head. “Nothing.” Just that I hate who I’ve become.

I don’t want to be that guy anymore. Looking over at her, he forced a smile. “It’s just Seeing you again has inspired me to want to be a better person.”She searched his eyes. “I think you’re a very good person. One of the best I’ve ever known.”Only because you don’t really know me. “Trust me, I could stand some improvement.”She was a rape victim who’d survived degradation on a level he hated to think about, and here he’d become a man-slut, going from lay to lay in an effort to escape his issues. Even if he’d had a shot of being with her when this security gig was over, she wouldn’t want anything to do with him now.

And he didn’t blame her.She was a f-ing miracle to him, so sweet and giving. Brave, and stronger than any other woman he’d ever met, maybe even stronger than she realized.I didn’t think about it, I just reacted.”Nate shook his head in awe. “Do you even know how brave that was? How selfless?”“It was reflex.

You guys had come there to save us. I wanted to help him, so we could get out. I wanted to live.”She was breaking his heart and didn’t even realize it. “I think part of me fell for you right there and then,” he said.

That image of her had been permanently seared into his mind, along with the way she’d stared up at him while he’d held his hand to her neck. Taya’s gaze flashed up to meet his, surprise in those silvery-gray depths. “You did?”Nate nodded, stroked his thumb along her cheek. I’m still falling. “I’ve thought about you so many times over the years, wondered how you were.”A soft, almost shy smile spread across her face. “Glad I wasn’t the only one.” Her hands came up to frame his face in return, her thumbs sweeping away the traces of the tears on his cheekbones. And Nate was done for.

He was done lying to himself, trying to pretend his feelings for her weren’t real, or that they’d go away. The truth was, they were only going to get stronger. Tilting her face up to his, he lowered his head and kissed her.He does improve and it is a wonderful ride!

It really made it hard for me to like him or to root for him to have something real with Taya. It also didn't make me sympathetic to how his man-whore ways seemed to be hurting him at work.I did hate how Taya was hunted through out the book and how the last big violent act hurt so many.

There's comfort in reading a book in which the standard format is followed. Here we have Nate (or Nathan) and Taya's story.Nate rescued Taya from a hostage situation in Afghanistan several years back and while instantly drawn to her that day, it was also the same day he lost is best friend. To say he hasn't dealt with his PTSD in a healthy manner is putting it lightly.

We gain very little knowledge of his upbringing other than his father was a drug dealer that left the family when he was young and his mother and half sister are both addicts. Nate wanted out of that situation as soon as possible and that's why he joined the military as soon as he could. He stated that he didn't want his PTSD to lead him into addiction but really, it kinda did. Instead of drugs or alcohol, he resorted to using sex as a crutch.Taya used therapy to help overcome the demons she encountered during her captivity as well as relying on her father and brother. Though she's put the situation behind her as much as possible, she's become the star witness when her capture is arrested in the states.Somehow, as is the norm for these books, Nate's HRT is put in charge of keeping her safe. This would be my only issue with these books. If this team is responsible for rescuing hostages, why are they usually put in the basic role of bodyguard?

I'm able to suspend reality and overlook this issue. So, Taya is being targeted so she can be taken out before she has the chance to testify. Nate, having seen her again after a few years, finds himself taken with her and wants her safety solely in his hands. Now, the main reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 is that it took a while before the action really got going.

We spent a lot of time reading about how they were moving Taya from one location to another and how the 'bad guys' were trying to find her and making plans to kill her once they did. It was well over halfway before any real action got going. Once it did it moved at a really quick pace.

Somehow I find the fact that all of these characters (in all of these books) surviving everything a bit unrealistic but again, I'm suspending reality here. All was well that ended well and Nate and Taya got their happily ever after.Usually there's clear clues as to who the next book will focus on. Although I'm not sure, I'm guessing it will be Cruz.

I guess we'll see. I was a little heartbroken at the beginning of this one, I loved Nate in all the books leading up to this one, he just seemed so together and sweet, finding out his 'addiction' was disappointing. (not in the book but in him) which is exactly what, as a reader, I was supposed to feel.I loved Taya, such strength, and I love how KC makes it clear that she needed extensive therapy and help for her to work through the trauma, she didn't suddenly become all healed and normal because she's so I was a little heartbroken at the beginning of this one, I loved Nate in all the books leading up to this one, he just seemed so together and sweet, finding out his 'addiction' was disappointing.

There was no mention of Taya or her relationship with Nate in the previous books. I wouldve liked a prologue of her time in captivity and Nathans rescue. Yes they touched on it in the book but maybe I wouldve felt a better connection between the two characters. I also wouldve loved for the age difference to be brought up among the Taya and Nate and not just mention. Like how about a discussion where they talked about it?? Still loving this series even if this This one started out slow for me.

Best one of the series! This was easily the best one of the series - such raw emotion throughout the entire story. Both characters were so deeply developed and their attraction palatable with each turning page.

The author finally addressed PTSD and didnt romanticize it at all. Perfect book! Best one of the series! This was easily the best one of the series - such raw emotion throughout the entire story.

It is clear she did her homework in both the military and psychological sense. A few artistic liberties were taken regarding how the terrorist threat to the trial and witnesses were handled. It was necessary to the story, though, and Kaylea Cross kept it well within believable bounds.

These qualities are both refreshing to find in an author and well appreciated by the reader.Taya's character was written quite well. Normally, I'm not a fan of cougar romances, (6 yr age difference here), but Nathan NEEDED the wisdom and maturity that came with those few extra years. Taya's knowledge and understanding of herself, gained through therapy and self reflection, allowed healing from her tragedies that Nathan lacked and desperately needed. She was able to reach the dark place within himself brought on by Nathan's own traumatic experiences. He knew he had reached a critical point where his poor coping mechanisms had turned into NOT being able to cope at all, causing concern amongst his team leader and commander.Taya needed the vision of herself through Nathan's eyea to heal even more.

He sees a survivor in her, not a victim. He sees a strong, brave, loving, capable warrior within her.

She's the beautiful and sexy light of his life. Through Nathan, Taya gains more insight into the best of herself.

Through Taya, Nathan sees a path out of the darkness; a way to put his past where it belongs and move forward. Nathan began his journey to change before Taya but he may not have been able to be whole without her influence and love.I admired the author's handling of individual and shared past trauma, together with ongoing, severe stressors. She didn't fall into the PTSD trap authors write themselves into so (too!) often. Taya and Nathan both found themselves with far too many complexities making up their individual mental and emotional states to ever fit within the parameters of a four letter PTSD label handed down to every person since the early 1990's, at least, who has had mild, unexpected reactions after experiencing emotional pain, physical injury and/or mental stress accrued while living life, to those with full blown psychosis resulting from purely unimaginable, horrifically tragic circumstances.Even the 19 yr old Syrian refugee terrorist characterization is superbly drawn. He was vulnerable to radicalization due to his pain and anger at the financial hardships and drastic lifestyle change brought on by true to life current events in the Middle East, specifically Ayman's homeland of Syria. Older men at his American neighborhood mosque, on the lookout for older children and young adults to exploit, to further the insanity and violence of their cause found just what they wanted in Ayman. They used his grief over not just his own personal and familial tragedy but also the cultural and ethnic tragedies in his homeland in order to turn him into their violent marionette.

Cross shows a keen understanding of political, militaristic and humanitarian world events in her finely crafted characters and plotlines. She clearly understands and lays out for readers the complexities of survivor's guilt and PTSD, with a small dash of Stockholm Syndrome for good measure. The only thing possibly lacking is the less than stellar counterterrorism actions regarding the intel and chatter comprising an active, credible threat and how security for the trial. However, without the fictional Homeland Security shortcomings, the last 3/4 of the book wouldn't have been possible. In that light, I'm more than willing to accept the tradeoff.Definitely worth the read and my favorite HRT book in this series, so far! Not that I thought this series was coasting along or anything, but AVENGED took the series to a whole other level.Taya (34) and Nathan (28) had a history that changed them in so many ways.

Nathan hadnt dealt with the loss of his friend during the rescue mission to get Taya. Classic survivors guilt. A slew of willing women had become his drug of choice for dealing with his demons. As the newest member of the HRT team, the team had become his family. He couldnt stand the thought ofHoly crap! Not that I thought this series was coasting along or anything, but AVENGED took the series to a whole other level.Taya (34) and Nathan (28) had a history that changed them in so many ways. Nathan hadn’t dealt with the loss of his friend during the rescue mission to get Taya.

Classic survivor’s guilt. A slew of willing women had become his drug of choice for dealing with his demons. As the newest member of the HRT team, the team had become his family. He couldn’t stand the thought of going to them for help, of them seeing him close to spiraling the drain or for them to think they couldn’t trust him to watch their six. But he wasn’t in complete denial; he’d known for a while that he wanted to be a better man and was working on it. Of the two, Nathan was more of a mess than Taya, but I never saw him as less of a man. And it was a nice to see a heroine be the rock for a change.Taya was an amazing heroine.

The things she’d suffered during her time in captivity, the duplicity of the government and the stunning truth of her marriage to a terrorist would have wrecked anyone. But she was a fighter. Even though her humanitarian efforts and the upcoming trial to put the mastermind behind her captivity behind bars painted a large bullseye on her back, she forged on, determined to do the right thing and seek justice. The blossoming romance felt sweet, filled with warmth and understanding. I loved Taya’s honesty about her feelings for Nathan; she gave him space but tried not to let him retreat into himself. If anyone could empathize with him, it was her. I also loved that Nathan was very aware that he could never treat her like the other women, and he never entertained the thought of trying to fck her out of his system (because so many heroes have that thought). That wasn’t who he was.

Their connection grew slowly and steadily, and their friendship and past experiences made a good foundation. Considering how emotional these two were, the sex scenes were likewise emotional as well as hot. Beautiful, actually. The suspense was mostly a cat and mouse game with terrorists trying to hunt her down and kill her before her court appearance. But the true excitement happened towards the end with a showdown of epic proportions. And I do mean epic!

The scenes were horrifying in their scope and brutality that I had chills through the whole ordeal. Once again, Taya got to show that spine of steel and courage that shouldn’t have been possible. This had everything I could have asked for in a romantic suspense.Taya stayed with him, unmoving. She didn’t murmur useless words of comfort or whisper for him not to cry. She simply held him in silence while he vented five years of pain and self-blame for the first time. And he was so pathetically fucking grateful to her for it that he leaned his forehead against the cold glass and let the tears flow.✭✭✭“Believe me, I wish I didn’t have to go, but if you’re dead set against WITSEC then I’ll call my commander and step down from this one—”“No.

No way.” Taya was aghast that he’d even consider such a thing. Leave the team for her? Risk his career, leave the guys who meant so much to him, because of her? She was deeply touched that he’d make that sacrifice for her, but she’d never allow it. “I would never let you do that.”“I’d do it though, to keep you safe.” His murmur stirred the hair at her temple. She shook her head. “Thank you, but no.”.

Cross writes a great story that isn’t just repeated book after book in the HRT series. Each character has their own issues to deal with on the team and while finding their true love. In this story, I expected certain things that didn’t happen and other things happened I didn’t expect. Kinda vague, huh? Well, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but just know that even on book 5, I am still loving the twists and turns and original stories Cross is coming up with.Nathan (or any of his nicknames “Doc”, “Dr.

Feelgood”, Nate, Schroeder), is a very conflicted guy on a downward spiral into a dark abyss. His teammates are starting to notice. His job is at risk. He has to pull his life together and learn how to heal from his past.

She is a kickass heroine even if she doesn’t feel like it. She and Nathan met in a horrible situation when he was a PJ in the Air Force and he rescued her from a terrorist after nine months of being held hostage. One difference between how they handled that situation is that she sought help, healed and moved on from the terrible experience. When the two of them are together they are so much better than when they are alone. They bring out the best in each other. There is so much respect and trust for one another. It poured out of them. I loved watching the chemistry between them and the love grow even stronger.

Cross wrote Nate and Taya’s love story so well. It truly fit their personalities and the story quite well. Avenged is quite a page turner and was difficult to put down.If you are looking for a fast paced romantic suspense with powerful emotion that will have you clinging to the book (or your ereader) wondering what will happened next, give Avenged a try.

While it is fun to read the series in order, they can be read as stand alones as each plot is unique to the book. She lives in Vancouver, BC with her husband and family.Kaylea loves to hear from readers, so please feel free to drop me a line and say hello. “I got your flowers. They’re beautiful, thank you.” A gorgeous riot of Gerber daisies and lilies in a rainbow of reds, pinks, yellows and oranges.“Welcome. Bet Duncan loved sending one of his guys out to pick them up for me.”She could hear the smile in his voice, imagined the devilish twinkle in his eyes.

Said it’s probably the first time in the history of WITSEC that a U.S. Marshal delivered flowers to one of their witnesses.”A low chuckle. “Well, this was a special circumstance, so they helped me out.”“I loved the card you sent with them the best though.” Proud of you.

Give ‘em hell tomorrow. He’d signed it Nathan rather than Nate, which had made her smile. “I had no idea you were romantic,” she continued. “All these interesting things I’m learning about you.” She hadn’t been able to wipe the silly smile off her face after one of the security team members had knocked on her door and handed them to her with a goofy smile and a, “special delivery”.“Baby, you haven’t seen anything yet. When the trial’s done you’re gonna get all the romance you can handle, and then some.”“Really?” Now that was something for a girl to look forward to, and it sure as hell did the trick in taking her mind off her worries.

“Well I’m all intrigued, because it’s been forever since I was romanced. What do you have in mind?

Candlelit dinners? Going to the movies? Lazy afternoon picnics?”“Not gonna give away my hand this early on, but I’ll take those into consideration.”“And what’s the key to your heart, by the way? I mean, other than the thing I did to you this morning.”“What thing is that?

Refresh my memory,” he said, a teasing note in his voice. She smiled, enjoying the light banter. It felt good to let her worry about tomorrow go and focus on what she had to look forward to when this was all done. Being with him again, seeing her family, getting back to her life. A life that would hopefully include Nathan in a romantic capacity.

“Waking you up with my mouth.”He gave a low groan. “I loved every second of it. But think simpler.”Simpler than sex? For a guy like him? I bet you’re a sucker for a home-cooked meal.

Am I right?” He chuckled.“That works too, but it’s still not the key.”“Then what?”“You.”She blinked, her heart squeezing at the conviction behind his answer. “Me?”“Yeah, just you.

And maybe bacon,” he added, a smile in his voice. He was so freaking adorable.“So you’re saying if I made and served you a BLT, you’d be putty in my hands?” Seemed hard to imagine, but okay.A masculine rumble filled her ears. “God, yeah.”She couldn’t help the sappy smile that spread across her face.

“Wow, you are easy. And I can definitely arrange that.”“I can hardly wait. Will you serve it to me naked? Or maybe wearing just a frilly little apron and heels?”She smothered a laugh, but a clear image of her doing just that popped into her head, serving him the sandwich in that sexy outfit while watching his eyes go all heated. “Depends on how good you are.”“Oh, baby, I’ll be so good to you, you have no idea.”—.
