Still reigning as one of the best VR games to hit the PlayStation 4/PlayStation VR, Firewall Zero Hour is a tactical online FPS where you form up teams and try to take control or defend a computer located somewhere on the map. You can check out my original review here, and the first expansion, here. Operation Heartland is the Third major expansion and it adds even more goodness to an already great game.

Following the release of Operation: Dark Web (the second expansion), Heartland adds even more missions with tons of cosmetic rewards for your Arsenal and for your preferred Contractor. Two completely new Contractors “Bear” and “Dom” are now ready to fight (Dom is being released a bit later on), and they bring new weapons such as the Z1 Reaper and (finally) the Concussion Mine, which really adds to the overall strategy of game play. One exclusive freebie is the Blood & Truth trinket, available for free when you download the new expansion. Sony London Studio partnered with First Contact to bring a cool cosmetic extra for your guns. It looks neat, but doesn’t really add anything to the weapon. Still, a nice little extra!

Also available are two brand new maps, the first being the Prepper. This map is loaded with more enclosed spaces than most other maps, but also some great strategic spots to plan your attack. The attention to detail really make you feel like you are in an abandoned Prep Bunker. The Second new map is called “Gauntlet” but sadly was not available at the time of review as it is scheduled to be released later this month. According to the developers, “Gauntlet is a training ground located in the state of Virginia, and will be an instant favorite for fans of Firewall Zero Hour’s Shoot house map.”

The New Contractor “Bear” is a hunter type that has fantastic stealth skill. He can go undetected in places, making him a dangerous opponent. His TC1 Crossbow is also a fine weapon with incredible range! I was not able to test “Dom” because he is being released later on in November but his official description states that is the first Contractor from France, and his Skill of “Survivalist” will allow players to receive an additional downed state.

As before, The Op-Pass will be $9.99, while a pack of 5 Hack Keys will be $4.99. Also, offered again is the Op-Pass and 25 Hack Keys in a bundle for $29.99. Hack Keys are a great option for players who don’t have as much time to play and the can get rewards faster. Also, if you have any Hack Keys left over from last season you can use them on Missions this season.
Once again, First Contact has done a wonderful job keeping this game alive. It seems every expansion keeps getting better. I love that this game is getting continued support as it is still one of the best PSVR experiences available. Some may not like the overall presentation, but even players that don’t really like tactical shooters can have a great time here. The community is also lively and fantastic so you should never have problems connecting. Firewall Zero Hour is a must play if you own a VR system. Let’s hope these expansions keep bringing all of the awesome for years to come!

Firewall Zero Hour (PSVR) – a must have for VRPlayStation VR gets a realistic run-and-gun game, but can its multiplayer-only action live up to the fan hype?Wielding the tubular, vaguely gun-shaped, PlayStation VR Aim Controller – as with most things performed in VR – looks pretty silly to anyone watching. But in-game the sense of immersion is astounding. It was originally released alongside single-player shooter and as the vibrations and shots rattled out, the spot-on tracking and feeling of looking down the sights of an actual rifle added a new level of drama and excitement as you stalked giant alien spiders on a distant planet.Ever since that moment, PlayStation VR owners have been crying out for a realistic Aim-controlled military simulation.

The disappointing tried and failed, which is why there’s such excitement around Firewall Zero Hour, a 4 vs. 4 multiplayer game that puts you in the boots of a private military contractor or terrorist in a series of small, well-designed maps. AdvertisementYour goal as an attacker is to disarm one of two firewalls before hacking a laptop, which a team member needs to crouch beside to speed up its data transfer. The defenders’ job is to stop them, and to achieve those goals both sides must work as cohesive teams, providing covering fire, reviving downed buddies, and working together to clear rooms, check corners, and secure the computer. The action has a similar cadence to fellow special forces shooter, Rainbow Six, with slow, stealthy progression punctuated by short, ultra-lethal firefights. As with Ubisoft’s hardy perennial, it only takes a few bullets to take you down, and a couple more to finish you off for good, so caution and stealth are paramount. Not that you need to be alive to help.

AdvertisementAs usual, VR veterans will need to enable smooth-turning instead of the mildly irritating step turn that’s the default, and also remove ‘vignettes’ while sprinting, which slightly narrows your field of view. Although both measures are designed to reduce the effects of motion sickness, if you’ve been playing VR for a while the game plays far better with all that turned off.And although you can play Firewall Zero Hour with a DualShock controller it’s a compromised experience. Using the Aim Controller makes shooting more accurate and adds immeasurably to the physicality of the experience, letting you blind fire through windows and gesture with your gun, pointing team mates to objectives or beckoning them around corners in a silent supplement to team chat. Firewall Zero Hour (PSVR) – it aims to pleaseThe game’s Achilles heel though, is matchmaking. As with all multiplayer VR games, and especially those that aren’t available cross-platform, finding games can sometimes take a while, and even once you’ve got people to play with you’ll often discover you don’t all speak the same language. You muddle through though, and it’s a process helped enormously by the friendliness of the community. You won’t find the kind of prepubescent screaming, racial epithets, and improper suggestions about your mother that reward anyone foolish enough to un-mute voice chat in Call Of Duty, for example.

It’s something that may well change as VR becomes cheaper and more accessible but at the moment it’s a blissful break from the madness. The final problem with Firewall’s online service is that each game is player-hosted, so if he or she decides they’ve had enough, everyone else is booted back to the main menu, losing your team and putting you back to square one in looking for a new match. It’s painful at times but is also the sort of thing that will almost certainly be fixed by developer First Contact, who have already proved highly responsive to community feedback.Despite its flaws, Firewall Zero Hour is a very good game. The slow exploration, poking your head around corners, ducking behind scenery, and collaborating as a unit are leant an exhilarating freshness in VR, a sense that’s heightened still further using the Aim Controller.

It’s an experience that no PlayStation VR owner should miss, especially with the player base in its current super-helpful mode. In Short: At last, the realistic, Aim-controlled multiplayer military sim PlayStation VR owners have been dreaming of.Pros: Tense combat, with well-designed maps full of choke-points.

Unusually friendly, supportive community. Aim Controller works great.Cons: Single-player is limited to training only. Matchmaking can be problematic and without an Aim Controller it’s a lot less compelling.Score: 8/10Formats: PlayStation VRPrice: £29.99Publisher: Sony Interactive EntertainmentDeveloper: First Contact EntertainmentRelease Date: 29th August 2018Age Rating: 16.
